Quite simply, oily skin is the result of very active sebaceous or oil glands - due to a combo of heredity and hormones. As it turns out the sebaceous glands are among the most sensitive in our body. The slightest shift in your hormone level is enough to get sebaceous glands pumping like crazy. The excess oil creates shine, makes skin feel greasy, attracts soil and debris - one reason you often end up with breakouts and flare-ups.
Biology is only the beginning. Your skin can become oilier for a slew of other reasons. Diet. Weather. Emotions. Even the wrong care. When too much oil is stripped away from skin, the body responds by producing even more oil to compensate for the loss.

- Avoid harsh soaps, stripping toners and aggressive drying lotions.
- Keep pores clean. If they're debris free, breakouts are less likely to pop up and pores will appear smaller.
- Steer away from any comedogenic (pore-clogging) ingredients - like petroleum and mineral oil.
- Learn to manage stress. When you are stressed-out, your body releases more androgens, hormones that stimulate oil glands.
- Remember, even oily complexions need a moisturizer especially in dry, winter months. Opt for an oil-free formula and apply it to areas that need it most - like your cheeks.
- Apply a full-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 whenever you are exposed to the sun.
